Vietnam AI market statistics need to distinguish between revenue, spending, adoption levels and supply capacity. No original reports are available for cross-checking within the scope of this assessment, so this article does not confirm market size or growth rates. It assesses the value, limitations and uses of each group of metrics.
Scope determines what the numbers mean
AI provider revenue is not the same as spending on AI in Vietnam. Spending may include imported services; revenue from Vietnamese businesses may include overseas customers. Comparisons should only be made when geographic scope and accounting methods are compatible.
AI in general needs to be distinguished from generative AI. Statistics on text-generation tools do not represent the entire market for image recognition, forecasting and automation.
Size and growth: value comes with conditions
Market size metrics help estimate market capacity if the source clearly specifies the currency, data period and products included. However, the total value does not indicate which customer groups are likely to buy or which segments are suitable for a new provider.
For the compound annual growth rate (CAGR), identify the starting year, ending year and whether it reflects historical results or a forecast. A forecast CAGR does not prove that the market has grown at that rate. Do not combine market size and growth rates from two reports with different methodologies to calculate future revenue.
Adoption rates: know who was surveyed
The percentage of businesses using AI needs to be accompanied by the survey sample, respondent profile and definition of “use”. Employees using chatbots on their own, businesses running trials and organizations deploying AI in their operations represent different levels of adoption.
Adoption surveys reflect demand for use, rather than just the flow of money. Their weakness is that the results may only represent the participating group. A survey of one industry or of large businesses is not enough to draw conclusions about all Vietnamese businesses without a basis for generalization.
Investment and workforce metrics are not substitutes for revenue
Investment capital reflects resource mobilization, not market revenue. Distinguish between announced and disbursed capital, and avoid counting the same deal more than once across multiple sources.
The number of AI businesses depends on the classification criteria: developing models, providing solutions or integrating AI. Similarly, the numbers of graduates, working professionals and job openings are not interchangeable when assessing the workforce.
Overall assessment: useful as a research framework
These groups of metrics are useful for building a research framework, but they are not sufficient for quantitative conclusions without the original reports and methodologies. When citing them, include the report name, data period and scope, and label the figures as actual, estimated or forecast.
For business decisions, choose metrics according to the question: revenue for market capacity, surveys for adoption demand, and workforce metrics for deployment capacity. Do not combine them into a single “AI market” figure.
Frequently asked questions
Is the publication year the same as the data year?
Not necessarily. A report may be published after the data collection period. When citing it, include both the publication year and the measurement period.
Can Vietnam’s market size be inferred from regional data?
Do not allocate regional figures by population or GDP without an appropriate methodology. Extrapolated results must be labeled as estimates, not as data observed specifically in Vietnam.
